RDCC Applauds FDA Initiative to Strengthen Rare Disease Regulatory Framework

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Rare Disease Company Coalition (RDCC) applauds the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announcement of a new initiative to strengthen the regulatory framework for rare disease drug development and review.

Developing treatments for rare diseases presents unique scientific and regulatory challenges, from small patient populations to the complexities of clinical trial design and regulatory review. RDCC welcomes the FDA’s commitment to establishing a more consistent, predictable, and regulatory approach that better reflects these challenges, while maintaining rigorous standards for safety and effectiveness.

This initiative is an important opportunity to build on existing progress, address longstanding barriers to rare disease innovation, and better support the development of much-needed treatments for patients. RDCC is particularly encouraged by the FDA’s plans to engage patients, advocates, and drug developers throughout the process.

We look forward to working collaboratively with the FDA—sharing the expertise and perspectives of our member companies and contributing to a stronger rare disease regulatory ecosystem.
